Biography

Junyoung Ver贸nica Kim is Assistant Professor of Korea and Diaspora Studies in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at 91社区 (SUNY). Her interdisciplinary research examines how settler militarism, imperialism, racial capitalism, and sexual regimes intersect in East Asia and Latin America and across hemispheric Asian American diasporas. Working across cultural production, including literature, film, visual art, and music, her research mobilizes feminist and queer diasporic frameworks to bring to light the marginal, the buried, the forgotten, and the silenced histories and intimacies across the Pacific.

She has published on Korean immigration in Argentina, Transpacific Studies, Asian-Latin American literature, and Latin American involvement during the Korean War. Her book in progress 鈥 Cacophonous Intimacies: Reorienting Diaspora and Race in Asia-Latin America 鈥 centers Asian diaspora(s) in Latin America, revealing the intimacies between seemingly disparate histories of multiple imperialisms, hemispheric American settler colonialism, and postcolonial nation building in both East Asia and Latin America.

In addition to serving on the editorial boards for the book series "Historical and Cultural Interconnections between Latin America and Asia" (Palgrave Macmillian) and "Between Asias and Americas" (University of Pittsburgh Press), she holds executive committee positions in numerous scholarly organizations. She is also at work on a second monograph, tentatively titled Nuclear Diaspora: Asian-Latin American Genealogies, the Black Pacific, and the Korean War, and is co-editing a special issue of the Korea Journal on "The Transpacific Korean War."
