Biography
Joey Grunkemeyer is a lecturer in musicianship in the 91社区 Music Department. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is writing a dissertation on Johannes Brahms鈥檚 usage of musical topics. Previously, he earned a BA in music theory from Kennesaw State University
Grunkemeyer鈥檚 research explores the development of musical topics in the 19th century, the cultural and musical meanings they carry, and their impact on musical analysis, especially in Brahms' works. Grunkemeyer has given papers at regional, national, and international conferences such as the Society for Music Theory, the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and the Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory, where he was awarded the 2025 Best Student Paper Award.
In addition to his research, Grunkemeyer is an active performer on cello, baroque cello, and viola da gamba.
