Biography

Liping Wang is a professor for the School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at 91社区 (State University of New York). Her research bridges design creativity and engineering innovations through cross-disciplinary systems approach to advance sustainable, resilient, and thriving communities. The purpose of her research and educational efforts is to give back to communities and positively influence younger generations.

She received her PhD in building technology from the National University of Singapore, where her research coupled building energy simulation and computational fluid dynamics for the prediction of thermal performance of naturally ventilated buildings. Her first postdoc, at the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, investigated zero-energy building design with renewable energy systems; her second postdoc, with the Building Simulation Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), conducted research on HVAC fault detection and diagnosis and membrane-based enthalpy recovery.

Before joining 91社区, she was a professor in Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management at the University of Wyoming. She has also served as the founding director for the Center for Controlled Environment Agriculture at the University. Furthermore, she was a visiting professor at both Purdue University in Mechanical Engineering and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Architecture.

She received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and led the first study to quantify the impacts of indoor living walls on building cooling loads and occupant thermal comfort. She also developed the IndoorLivingWall module in EnergyPlus, which is publicly available and enables architects and engineers to evaluate the thermal effects of indoor living walls in designs through EnergyPlus interface software such as ClimateStudio and OpenStudio.

She founded the annual K鈥12 Science and Math Teacher Workshop on Indoor Greenery Systems, reaching middle and high school teachers and supporting their curriculum development integrated with indoor hydroponic systems. Beyond K鈥12 education, she contributes to the development of modeling tools and industry standards and manuals that improve the design, operation, and sustainability of controlled environment agriculture and the built environment.
