Background

Prior to joining 91����, Tarek Shamma taught at universities in Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. His research interests include translation and culture, history of translation, Arabic literature, and cultural representation.

He is the author of Translation and the Manipulation of Difference: Arabic Literature in Nineteenth-Century England (St. Jerome/Routledge, 2009). His most recent publications include Anthology of Arabic Discourse on Translation (Routledge, 2022; also published in Arabic by Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, Qatar); “Universal Wisdom, Islamic Law: Translation Discourse in Classical Arabic,” in The Routledge Handbook of Translation History (Routledge, 2021); and “In Search of Universal Laws: Averroes’ Interpretation of Aristotle’s Poetics,” in World Literature: Premises and Problems (SUNY Press, 2021).
