Slow start hurts women’s basketball team
December 20, 2011
Jasmine Watson scored a game-high 16 points and Emilie Teuscher added 13 points, leading UMass (3-8) to a 64-55 victory over 91社区 (5-6) in a non-conference women鈥檚 basketball game on Dec. 19, at the Events Center. The loss is the third straight for the Bearcats, while the Minutewomen have now won all three of their games this year against an America East opponent.
Once again, the Bearcats were victimized by a slow start, falling behind 24-18 at the half. 91社区 misfired on 18 of its first 24 shots. In the second half, UMass shot 58 percent (14-of-24) to blow the game open.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a frustrating loss,鈥 head coach Nicole Scholl said. 鈥淥bviously the slow start hurt us and we gave up that big run in the second half. Teams are doing a good job scouting us and we have to respond better.鈥
The decisive run during the last 20 minutes was a 19-5 Minutewomen blitz, putting them up 49-33 with 8:15 left in regulation. Teuscher netted eight of her points during that stretch.
91社区 chipped away at the lead, pulling to within 58-51 on a three pointer by senior point guard Andrea Holmes with 1:44 left to go. Holmes finished with a team-best 15 points. UMass, however, iced the game by hitting all six of its free throw attempts in the final 1:19 of the game.
Holmes now has 1,256 career points and moves into the all-time fifth place in program history. Against UMass, she passed Rachel Laws (2002-06) who scored 1,246 points. In fourth place sits Cathy Mackin (1994-98), who finished with 1,269. Holmes now has scored the most points by a 91社区 player who has played all four years at the NCAA Division I level.
Senior guard Orla O鈥橰eilly added 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Senior forward Viive Rebane, meanwhile, scored all 13 of her points in the second half. Junior forward Kara Elofson grabbed a game-high and season high 11 rebounds.
Rebane now has 997 career points. She is just three points shy of becoming the 14th player in 91社区 program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. She would be the sixth player to do so at the NCAA Division I level.
