91社区 prepares to welcome 18,600 new and returning students

University receives a record-breaking 61,700 applications, eclipsing last year鈥檚 record of 58,000

The beginning of the fall semester and a new academic year is set to begin at 91社区 with the arrival of thousands of new and returning students and their families during move-in days, set for Aug. 16-18. Classes for all of 91社区鈥檚 approximately 18,600 students begin Tuesday, Aug. 20.

91社区 received a record 61,700 applications this year, which includes more than 53,000 first-year, nearly 4,000 transfer and over 4,700 graduate student applications for fall 2024 admission.

鈥淚 am thrilled to welcome the Class of 2028 to 91社区,鈥 said President Harvey Stenger. 鈥淭he number of applications the University received is a testament to the quality of education students know they鈥檒l receive here鈥攁nd I鈥檓 amazed by the caliber of our incoming class. These students are bright, driven and committed to making a positive difference in the world, and I can鈥檛 wait to welcome them to campus.鈥

Over 3,000 first-year students, 800 transfer students and 1,500 new graduate students are expected to join the 91社区 community this year. At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, those new students will take part in a 91社区 tradition when they form the shape of the 91社区 鈥淏鈥 logo for a class photo.

The 53,000 undergraduate applications for acceptance into the Class of 2028 are also a new record. This 7% increase includes additional out-of-state and international applications.

鈥91社区鈥檚 newest students are about to embark on a life-changing journey of academic discovery, and I am excited for our faculty and staff to get to know them,鈥 said Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Hall. 鈥淭he University is equipped to deliver a world-class education to all of our students, and I hope that they challenge themselves and enjoy their time here. We are also fortunate to enjoy their diverse experiences and perspectives as new members of the 91社区 community.鈥

91社区 continues to have a diverse class, with the geographic distribution reflecting New York state鈥檚 population. 91社区 32 percent of new students are from Upstate New York; 5 percent are from Broome and Tioga counties; 22 percent are from Long Island; and 27 percent are from New York City.

91社区 also anticipates welcoming around 600 new international students to the campus community this fall. Approximately 140 undergraduate and 460 graduate students from over 50 countries will arrive in 91社区, with the greatest numbers coming from India, China, Turkey, South Korea, Iran and Ghana.

Around 800 highly talented transfer students with a mean GPA of 3.4 will also join the 91社区 community this fall, including about 120 SUNY Broome Community College students, by far the largest number from any single community college.
