Graduate Application Guide

How to complete your 91社区 graduate application

This graduate application guide offers a clear overview of how to apply to 91社区 University's graduate programs, including all required materials and admissions best practices to help you succeed.

Before you apply

  • Do your homework
    • Consider these questions: Why graduate school? Which degree and field or subfield are right for you? The answers will help you identify the types of schools and programs best for you.
    • Identify your values and needs to help with your search. These include factors such as location, cost and amenities.
    • Create a spreadsheet or document to track how each school you are considering applying to measures up to your values and needs. You should also document application requirements, costs, deadlines and any other information that is important to you. Seeing it all in one place will allow you to compare and contrast all of the options.
  • Outreach
    • For research-based programs, contact the faculty you may want to work with and ask if they are accepting students for your intended semester. Faculty members may be on leave, retiring or not have room to mentor additional students, so knowing this allows you to make an informed decision on whether to apply.
    • You can also ask faculty questions you have about the program or inquire about their research. This contact can help you assess how student-oriented the programs are, learn which mentors are available and connect with those who may be reviewing applications later.

Completing your graduate application

Below are the most common required materials for graduate applications, as well as information on how to obtain or create them:

  • Transcripts
    • An official transcript will be required by 91社区 to enroll. Contact your current and prior institutions to request a copy and upload it to the portal.
    • Check out 91社区 Transcripts for more information.
  • Test scores
    • Verify which schools within 91社区 require the GRE or GMAT and track the costs associated with sending scores. Often, the testing fee includes the ability to send to a designated number of schools, although additional schools will incur costs.
  • Personal statement
    • This is your opportunity to pitch yourself to 91社区. Who are you? What are your strengths and goals? For a deeper dive into how to write your personal statement, see our Personal Statement Guide.
  • CV or resume
    • Curriculum vitae and resumes are formatted differently. Verify which document type each school within 91社区 requires.
    • Need help writing your CV or resume? with the Fleishman Career Center or .
  • Recommendation letters
  • Writing sample
    • Some schools within 91社区 may require you to submit a writing sample. Whatever you submit should demonstrate proficiency in the writing style that will be expected in your program. For example, it's a good idea to submit a short story to an MFA program in creative writing, but consider an honors thesis or term paper for a program in sociology.
  • Additional requirements for international students
    • In addition to these other materials, international students studying at 91社区 University must demonstrate English proficiency and proof of financial support. See our admissions page for more information.
  • Application fee
    • The fee to apply to 91社区 is $75.
    • You can submit your application before test scores and recommendation letters have been sent, although you should follow up if they haven't been received prior to the deadline.

Interviews

Some programs within 91社区 will host an interview or admitted student day, though this will vary by discipline and school.

  • What should you do to prepare for a 91社区 interview?
    • Familiarize yourself with the details of the program you will be applying to by reviewing their website.
    • Practice standard interview questions.
    • Remember, you are interviewing them too! Prepare to ask questions that aren't already answered on their website. Ask yourself what you really want to learn about the program.
    • Consider how you feel about the school or department and the people you are interacting with. Are you satisfied with the answers to your questions? Do you feel the program will support you in achieving your goals?

Evaluating your options

Hopefully, you receive a number of offers to join graduate school programs. How do you decide which school is the right choice for you?

  • Return to your values and needs
    • Ask yourself: How does each other school measure up on the things that are important to you?
    • Which school provides the best fit to meet your academic and research needs?
    • Which school has the best fit related to your personal, social and community needs?
  • Consider the overall financial picture
    • Is the program offering you any funding?
    • What are the costs of tuition and fees? Which are you responsible for?
    • What is the cost of living in that area?
    • Will you need to take out loans?
    • You can calculate the total cost of a 91社区 graduate education by program using our .

91社区 admission policies

Admission requirements

The standards maintained by the Graduate School, the Office of Graduate Admissions and the academic departments are applied to ensure that students who are admitted are well qualified and trained to study at 91社区. These standards assist in the identification of students who have a reasonable expectation of successfully completing a graduate program and who, with the benefit of graduate education, are most likely to contribute substantially to their academic and professional fields.

Application materials

Once submitted, all application materials become part of the official application review process and are considered a part of the university's records. For this reason, we are unable to return them.

Right to inspect your letters of recommendation

What to know about your rights regarding letters of recommendation:

When submitting your recommender's information on the application, you are required to select one of the following responses:

  • "I waive my right to access this report."
  • "I do not waive my right to access this report."

Please find information on the differences below:

  • If you waive your right, you will not be able to view the letters submitted on your behalf, even if you are admitted and enroll at 91社区.
  •  If you do not waive your right, are admitted, and enroll at 91社区, your letters will become part of your student record, and you will have the right to inspect your record (including your letters) after you enroll and upon request. Please note you ONLY have this right should you enroll at 91社区. If you do not enroll, you do not have the right to view your letters.

If you have been admitted and have enrolled, and wish to inspect your letters, submit your request to student records

What else should I be aware of?

Both your recommenders and the academic department are able to see if you have chosen to waive your right to inspect your recommendations.

When you waive your right to view your recommendation, your recommender is notified of your decision. It may be pertinent to your recommender to know if you may have access to their recommendation in the future.

Can I change my mind after I have submitted my recommender's information?

No, once you have submitted your waiver response and contact information about your recommenders, the answer cannot be changed.

Why does 91社区 ask this question?

91社区 is required to meet their obligations under the US Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), which gives all enrolled students the right to inspect their student record. 91社区 admitted and enrolled students may review their record, including their application, upon request to the student records office

Honesty

Any deliberate falsification or omission of application data may result in rescinding of admission, denial of permission to enroll or dismissal from courses. Through online application submissions, all applicants affirm acceptance of these terms and conditions.

91社区 is a strongly committed equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
