Follow the formatting guidelines to ensure the efficient processing of your thesis/dissertation and the conferral of your degree. 

Degree Checklists

Master's Degrees

At their discretion, departmental or school/college graduate committees recommend for the master鈥檚 degree those candidates who have:

  • Completed at least 24 credit hours of graduate coursework in residence at 91社区 University;
  • Completed the required coursework presented for the degree;
  • Maintained continuous registration throughout their period of enrollment;
  • Maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in courses approved by the departmental or school/college graduate committee and presented for the degree; 
  • Given evidence satisfactory to their examination committees, by means of a master鈥檚 examination (written and/or oral) and required papers, capstone project, or a thesis, that they are familiar with basic hypotheses and techniques of their disciplines and are competent in applying them.

Candidates for the master鈥檚 degree must complete all requirements for the degree, including thesis if required by the program, within five years after matriculating in the Graduate School.

Doctoral Degrees

At their discretion, departmental or school/college graduate committees recommend for the doctoral degree those candidates who have:

  • Completed at least 24 credit hours of graduate coursework in residence at 91社区 University;
  • Completed the required coursework presented for the degree;
  • Maintained continuous registration throughout their period of enrollment;
  • Maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in courses approved by the departmental or school/college graduate committee and presented for the degree. Note: Students in the PharmD program in the SOPPS must maintain a 2.50 average;
  • Passed a comprehensive examination (written and/or oral), which provides evidence that they are familiar with basic hypotheses and techniques of their discipline and are competent in applying them;
  • Satisfactorily fulfilled the departmental or school/college research skills requirement;
  • Filed appropriate forms and been approved of ABD status;
  • Submitted a dissertation, on a topic approved by the department, that embodies the results of original research and gives evidence of high scholarship. Note: This requirement does not apply to students in the PharmD program in the SOPPS or in the DNP, PT and OTD programs in the DCNHS, who instead complete capstone projects.

Candidates for the doctoral degree must complete all requirements for the degree, including the dissertation, within five years after admission to doctoral candidacy.

Deadlines:

Degree-completion deadlines are posted on the Office of Student Records and Registrar Services website.

  • If you are unable to meet these deadlines, you will have to register for the next semester and resubmit the Graduate Application for Degree (GAFD).
  • If you are an international student and you do not graduate by the completion date listed on your I-20, you must apply for an Extension of Stay with the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. 
  • If you need to cancel your Graduate Application for Degree (GAFD) or update your diploma mailing address, contact the Degree Coordinator in the Office of Student Records and Registrar Services at degree@binghamton.edu.
