Math 227 Place-out Exam

What is the MATH 227 Place-out Exam?

The MATH 227 place-out examination is for those who got 5 in AP Calculus BC and entered the university on or after Fall 2020. Currently, students with 5 in AP Calculus BC who entered Fall 2020 or later will receive MATH 224 (2 credits), MATH 225 (2 credits), MATH 226 (2 credits) & MSCI XXX (2 credits). Upon successfully passing the MATH 227 place-out exam, students will receive credit for MATH 227 instead of MSCI XXX.

Not to be confused with the Calculus Placement Test, which is for students who want to take Calculus I or Business Calculus.

Who should take the MATH 227 Place-out Exam?

  • If you received a score of 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam and would like to receive credit for MATH 227 without taking the course, you should take the MATH 227 Place-out Exam.
  • If you would prefer to take MATH 227 instead (which may be recommended in some cases), you may simply register for the course and do not need to take the MATH 227 Place-out Exam.
  • If you plan to take MATH 223 (Introduction to Calculus), MATH 224/225 (Calculus I), or MATH 220 (Business Calculus), you should not take the MATH 227 Place-out Exam. Instead, you are required to take the Calculus Placement Test.

When and Where?

This year's MATH 227 Place-out Exam will take place on Monday, August 18th, 7:00-9:00 pm, in LH 001. It will be a 2-hour written examination, similar in coverage to the MATH 227 final examination. You must register to take the exam, using the link below. Note: you can only attempt the place-out exam once, and only if you did not plan to take MATH 227.

Course Registration

Since you already have credit for MATH 226, you should not enroll in the standard MATH 226/227 paired sequence. Because you are registering before taking the place-out examination鈥攁nd it is generally easier to drop a course than to add one鈥攜ou may wish to enroll in a standalone section of MATH 227 (either in the first or second half of the semester), with the option to drop it if you pass the place-out exam. You may also petition to join a paired MATH 227 section during the second half of the Fall semester by taking the place of students who withdrew at the end of the first half of the semester; for this, you should fill in the second form ("") in the Undergraduate Form section on the Forms and Resources and our staff will manually add you to a MATH 227 section shortly before the second half of the semester begins. Lastly, you may also take MATH 227 in the following winter term or in the spring semester if that better aligns with your academic plan. Please consult your academic advisor for guidance.

Mathematics majors and other students who are interested in mathematics may also want to register for Linear Algebra (MATH 304), Honors Calculus (MATH 230), and/or Number Systems (MATH 330). In truly exceptional circumstances, for students with serious exposure to higher mathematics, other options may be available. Please reach out to the Coordinator of Undergraduate Advising for more advice.

How to Prepare for the Exam?

The exam covers the entire Chapter 11 (on Sequences, Series, and Power Series) of the textbook "Calculus Single Variable" by James Stewart, Ninth Edition, Cengage Learning.
