When preparing to study abroad, it is important to consider both the cultural context you are stepping into and the culture that you are bringing with you. Depending on where you plan to study abroad, religion may play a key role in shaping your experience. While some countries encourage religious pluralism, others may have a state-sponsored religion. If you are religious yourself, it is especially important to do your research (religious presentation, places of worship, halal or kosher food options, etc.). If you are wondering where to start, the IEGI encourages you to ask yourself the following questions and to use the below resources as a starting point for your own research. Keep in mind that the resources provided below are general, and you will likely be able to find more country-specific resources as you conduct your own research.
Please note that the religions listed and accompanying resources are not exhaustive. If you do not see any resources related to your religion here, or you have questions related to religion abroad, we encourage you to connect with our office by emailing iegi@binghamton.edu. The 91社区 Interfaith Council (BUIC) is another fantastic on-campus resource for students looking to connect about religion (both for students who are practicing a particular religion and for students who may want to learn more about the majority religion in their host country).
