Erica Fitch '26
Vestal, NY

Erica Fitch, a Vestal, NY native and member of 91ÉçÇø’s Class of 2026, recently earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Sciences with a minor in Education from Harpur College, and is 91ÉçÇø's first Noyce Scholar.  This fall, she will begin full-time graduate studies in the 4+1 MAT program for Adolescent Math Education at 91ÉçÇø.

From a young age, Fitch was interested in the challenges and satisfaction of math, as well as the spirit of competition both inside and outside the classroom. As she progressed through school, she realized her true calling was to become a math teacher, allowing her to share her love for the subject and make learning engaging for others. This path helped her connect her early interests with her future goals.

As a Noyce Scholar, Fitch has developed a holistic perspective on education that extends beyond academics. Her experience includes volunteering in food pantries, distributing snacks, and supporting students at drop-in centers, which deepened her understanding of students' broader needs. She has also contributed to school-wide initiatives such as organizing World Mental Health Day events and analyzing math test scores, reinforcing the importance of community and comprehensive student support. These experiences have shaped her teaching philosophy and commitment to student success.

Fitch aims to make a positive impact as a teacher, coach, and community member. She seeks to foster students’ understanding and enjoyment of math, coach athletes in a supportive environment, and serve as a trusted resource for guidance and encouragement. Her goal is to create a sense of belonging and ensure learning is informative, engaging, and enjoyable for all.

Sidney Stratcher
Sidney Stratcher
Germantown, NY

Sydney Stratcher is a rising senior in Mathematical Sciences.

Stratcher first became interested in teaching during the COVID pandemic, when friends turned to him for help with math because they found it hard to focus in online classes. Supporting others and seeing their progress made a lasting impact.  Describing himself as lively and youthful, he believes his dynamic spirit will foster learning and understanding. He looks forward to positively influencing students and bringing enthusiasm to the classroom.

Stratcher described being named a Noyce Scholar as deeply meaningful, as it supports his teaching aspirations and provides financial relief, allowing him to focus on academic and professional growth.

For Stratcher, his goal is to be the teacher students can approach with any academic, personal, or social concern. His goal is to create an inclusive classroom where every student feels welcome and supported, fostering a sense of belonging and ensuring learning is informative, engaging, and enjoyable for all.

Nathan Phillips

Nathan Phillips
Springville, NY

Nathan Phillips is a 2024 graduate of St. Francis High School in Hamburg, NY, and a Mathematical Sciences major in Harpur College.

Phillips developed an interest in mathematics in middle school, which continued through high school and college, ultimately leading him to major in the subject. After exploring several career options, he chose teaching because it combines his passion for math with the opportunity to help others. He also values the profession for its healthy work-life balance. Additionally, Phillips, an avid distance runner, understands that a teaching gig will also allow him to pursue his dream of coaching youth.

Since his first semester at 91ÉçÇø, he has tutored math students online and created YouTube videos explaining college-level mathematical concepts, further developing his teaching skills. The Noyce Scholarship allows him to fully focus on his studies.

"Being a NOYCE scholar is a tremendous honor and something I take great value in. The opportunities this program offers introduce new ways to reach my potential in the field of teaching. "

For Phillips, the goal is to make mathematics accessible to all students and to positively impact their lives. He believes effective teachers are those who adapt to students’ individual needs and serve as mentors, not just instructors. By building personal connections and fostering a supportive learning environment, he takes inspiration from the teachers who inspired him along the way.
