Housing Group Formation

Signing up for housing with a roommate or group

Forming a housing group is a required step for students who plan to sign up for housing with specific roommates. Whether you鈥檙e pairing with one person or coordinating a larger group, the process requires clear communication, planning, and timely action in the housing portal. This page outlines how to create or join a group, key deadlines, group size options, and what to expect during room selection so you and your group can navigate the process with confidence.

Students who plan to sign up for housing as an individual do not need to participate in group formation.

How to form a housing group

If you are signing up with a roommate or as part of a group, you will need to form or accept an invitation to join a group in the housing portal before selecting your room. To form a housing group at 91社区:

  • All members of the group must have registered by logging into the housing portal and agreeing to the University Housing Agreement.
  • There must be a chosen GROUP LEADER.
    • The group leader will create a group in the housing portal and invite others to join.
    • The group leader will also be responsible for housing everyone in the group. During room selection only the Group Leader will be able to access the portal.
  • ALL GROUP MEMBERS must accept the invitation to join the group before room selection begins. If you form a group and then change your plans, the group leader can delete the group. Individuals can also leave the group at any time.
  • To find each other in the portal and form a group, all group members must select the SAME housing type.
    • Students who select housing type 1 - housing based on Gender Identity must all share the same gender identity.
    • Students who do not share the same gender identity and want to live together must all select housing type 2 - All Gender Housing in order to be able to form a group together.
  • If you are considering a speciality housing option, everyone in the group must sign the SAME speciality housing agreements.

Once you form or join a group, you will no longer be visible to other students searching for roommates in the portal.

Groups can be changed as often as you would like prior to the start of room selection.

Remember, forming a group does not guarantee you will find vacant space that will match your group size during room selection.

If you opt to sign up as part of a group, make sure your group is communicating with each other and that everyone is in agreement about your housing plan. Most importantly, have backup plans ready in the event your group needs to split up or consider another area during room selection. Remember, you are not actually in a group until that group has been formed in the portal.

Group sizes

At 91社区, students may form a housing group of 2-6 people only.

If a group does not fill a space (flat/suite/apartment), the remaining vacancies will be available for selection by other students.

Regardless of group sizes, students are not permitted to contact others to request someone move or not select a particular space. Students who engage in this behavior may be reassigned to a different space and are not guaranteed to be reassigned with their roommate/group or within their preferred community.

Note that the rules in the Returning Student Process prioritize groups that can completely fill a space. Room selection times in the returning student process are based on the rules for each option and the groups average credit hours.

In the New & Transfer Student Processes no priority is given to groups that can completely fill a space.  Room selection times in these processes are based on randomly assigned timeslots regardless of group size.

To completely fill a space, groups need to be configured as follows:

Apartments

  • 4 or 6 people to fill a Hillside apartment.
